Birgit Sohn “Duhast”
1. Tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Birgit and I am 51 years old. I am from Germany and have been living in the US since almost 9 years. Yes, Germany is that little country in Europe that won the Soccer World Championship. I came over here when I was still working for Adidas. I supported our team doing the integration of Reebok and Rockport into the Adidas group. After that I worked for Reebok and Rockport. The plan was to stay in the US for 5 years and then go back to Germany. As you can see that never happened because I met my now husband and we are married since 5 years. I left the sporting goods industry after 12 years and now work at a nursing home as a CNA. I love my job, it is very rewarding and I can make a difference in people’s lives.
2. Tell us your CrossFit story (where were you before RCFBC and where are you now?)
I started to work out when I was 20 (sadly). I ran and played squash and went for bicycle rides. At 24 I did martial arts for six years and then had to stop because of issues with my back. When I started to work for Adidas, I went to their gym regularly and did cardio and weights. I wouldn’t want to miss working out. When Reebok opened Reebok CrossFit One people in the gym said to me “you have to try, you will love it, the way you work out”. It took about a year until I started to go to the Master Class for people over 40. First I went 2 days a week and the other days kept working out at the gym. Then I got hooked. When I left Rockport 2 years ago I joined Hingham CrossFit as I didn’t want to miss it anymore. It was not even an option to go to a regular gym. When I heard that RCFBC opened I did a trial and then joined.
3. What does being part of RCFBC community mean to you?
I love the community and the diversity of people doing CrossFit at RCFBC. It is like a big family. We have fun and lots of laughs and we all do our best to get better. We help and motivate each other. I am always looking forward to seeing my work out buddies when I go to the 5:30pm class. Even though I am usually tired when I get home after work, I still don’t want to miss class. Some of us sometimes hang out afterwards and have a drink and a bite to eat. How much better can it get! And most important, I found a new best friend Michelle (Masone). We have lots of fun doing competitions together like the “Battle of the Sexes” and we motivate each other getting better. We both look forward to doing back squats and pushing each other to put on an extra 5 pounds. It is wonderful!
4. What accomplishments are you most proud of?
I am proud that I can do CF even though I am not 25 anymore and my body sometimes is screaming. I push to my limits and every once in a while go a little too far. I never in my life climbed up a rope and at 50 years old I did it and I am getting better. To be part of the RCFBC community makes me very proud and I hope that the family keeps growing.
5. What are your challenges and goals going forward?
A real challenge for me are push ups and everything that goes overhead. Sometimes it is a real struggle to accept that I am stuck with a certain weight, but I am working on it. And then there are double unders. I am going to practice that with Michelle and Jay and maybe I can do a few dubs before I turn 60….My goal is to keep going and staying in shape until I am 100 years old.
6. What do you miss about Germany?
I miss my family, especially my nephews. My husband and I try to visit them twice a year. We just had a few days there and will go back for Christmas. I also miss all of my friends. With many of them I share more than 10 years of friendship. Some of them come to visit me here in the US and we stay in contact on Skype and email. However, I found new friends here and I am happy where I am.
Birgit has a great sense of humor and keeps us all laughing If you don’t know Birgit she is very caring, kind, and is a great motivator. We all have our goats but with Birgits determinations overhead movements will become stronger with time. Of course, she mentioned Germany winning the World Cup. 🙂 I’m sure it’s tough being so far from home but Birgit has made a fitness home with us at RCFBC.
