Kiel and Laura Iwanik
1. Tell us a little about yourself?
Laura- I am 28 and originally from Medway, MA. I have a twin sister and an older brother. Kiel and I moved to the south shore a couple years ago for my job as a high school history teacher. We enjoy the outdoors- hiking with our dog and skiing. I also enjoy reading in my spare time.
Kiel- I grew up in Gardner, MA and relocated to Amherst for college. Laura and I met in western Mass and eventually landed in Weymouth after a few pit-stops. We have spent the last few years discovering all the wonderful things that the south shore has to offer! I currently work for a biotech company in Cambridge that does some pretty exciting work in cancer genetics.
2. Tell us your CrossFit story (where were you before RCFBC and where are you now?)
Laura- I grew up playing soccer and riding horses and continued to ride competitively throughout college. I tried to remain active after college by jogging a couple of times a week. I never lifted weights before RCFBC and couldn’t imagine doing what I am capable of now. Kiel talked me into joining RCFBC about a year ago. I was a little skeptical but wanted nice arms for our wedding last fall, so I joined him in on-ramp and have not looked back! I love the challenge every class brings and the soreness I feel after tough workouts!
Kiel- I played soccer and basketball throughout high school, and have been an avid skier for most of my life. During college I lifted weights and joined the occasional intramural team. I have always been active in various outdoor endeavors, but never truly challenged myself. Since joining RCFBC, I have seen significant progress in my overall fitness. I find myself constantly monitoring the RCFBC website in anticipation of the next WOD release!
3. What does being part of RCFBC community mean to you?
Laura- Horseback riding is typically an individual sport. Riding in college brought a new element of camaraderie through the intercollegiate dressage team. It was wonderful to meet others who shared in your passion, encouraged you, and cheered you on. I feel the same way about CrossFit! Working out is usually a solitary activity but I love the class atmosphere of RCFBC. I find that other members, and of course the coaches, are so supportive and helpful with new techniques. The community creates such a positive environment to challenge myself in every workout. I also enjoy going to RCFBC with Kiel and think it is wonderful to have a fitness routine we can follow together.
Kiel- The RCFBC community is fantastic. The coaches are great motivators who truly bring out everyone’s individual strengths. The members are essentially one big team working towards a common goal. Combined this creates a positive atmosphere for everyone to achieve fitness.
4. What accomplishments are you most proud of?
Laura- I am most proud of gaining strength through lifts I never imagined myself doing. I also am proud of my squat progression.
Kiel- I’m proud of some of the gymnastics progression that I’ve made, specifically regarding handstand push-ups and muscle-ups.
5. What are your challenges and goals going forward?
Laura- I would like to achieve more than five double-unders and be able to do pull-ups.
Kiel- Double-unders still remain a huge challenge for me. I would also like to improve on my core strength and OLY lifts. Oh, and general endurance. Although the ‘to do’ list seems to be never-ending, the progress that I’ve made so far serves as good motivation!
6. Has CrossFit changed the way you feel about fitness?
Laura- Yes! CrossFit has changed my perspective on fitness. I previously poked fun at our friends who did CrossFit for their obsession with it. Now I understand their enthusiasm and am so glad Kiel talked me into joining! I feel increasingly stronger and capable of new challenges.
Kiel- Absolutely. Before CrossFit, I never really considered the benefits of group classes. I would go to the gym irregularly, adhere to the same predictable routine, and see the same lackluster results. Instead of exercising to look good, CrossFit challenges to adopt an overall healthy lifestyle.
