Tammy and David Ruggiero ” Team RUGGS”

1. Tell us a little about yourself?

David- I have two teenage daughters, live in Hingham, and love all water sports; more recently really enjoying Paddle boarding in Hingham Bay. I work for a technology consulting company that keeps me traveling most of the week.

Tammy- I’m 1/2 of “Team Ruggs” 🙂  45 years old, mother of 2 teenage girls Abbi (16) and Elli (14), stay at home mom, Health Coach and owner of Simply Inspired Wellness. I have been doing CrossFit a little over a year and LOVE it! Aside from CrossFit, I love the beach/ocean and my favorite outdoor place in Hingham is World’s End.  I enjoy biking, paddle boarding, skiing, sailing, reading & learning anything related to health and wellness.

2. Tell us your CrossFit story (where were you before RCFBC and where are you now?)

David- We have been doing CrossFit for a little over a year now and I really enjoy it.  Before CrossFit, I worked out on the basement elliptical and in hotel gyms.  This was OK, but became routine and felt like too much of a chore.  I enjoy that CrossFit takes me completely out of my comfort zone and forces me to try things I would have never done.  I have learned a great deal about the movements I can do well and what I struggle with, which motivates and challenges me.

Tammy- I had been an avid walker for years but developed shin splints.  I took a long time off from any real exercise due to pain, but had found  the elliptical to work well  for about a year before I found RCFBC. I was bored, unmotivated and exercising because I knew it was good for me, but did not enjoy it.  I actually ended up at RCFBC because I was searching for some interim training for my daughter.  After trading MANY emails with Mike and determining the timing was not going to work for Abbi, he convinced me to try on-ramp. I was skeptical, but I figured “Why not?”.  I asked Dave if he wanted to try it with me. We were one of the first On-Ramp Classes out back in the old space. Day 1 of On-Ramp, I was hooked.   On day 1 when I told Mike who I was, “the Tammy with the 100 questions”, he said “Oh Man, we have to hug it out!”.  What a reception! Mike was instrumental in me falling in love with CrossFit. His enthusiasm, knowledge, and sense of humor create a welcoming and fun atmosphere.  As the year progressed and RCFBC kept growing, all of the coaches have been amazing and and helped me do things I never in a million years would have thought I could do!  CrossFit is a huge challenge, physically and mentally. It keeps me motivated, interested, and excited to come each day.  It is also very empowering.  It is a huge stress relief. When I am at the box, I am focused on me. I leave my worries at the door.  I can’t imagine my life without it.

3. What does being part of RCFBC community mean to you?

David- I love the fact that everyone is so encouraging and routing everyone on!  Also, I travel a lot and doing the Travel WODs helps keep me connected.

Tammy- I LOVE coming to class.  I am a regular at the 9 am and I look forward to seeing everyone there.  I can go to any class though and know people. Everyone is welcoming. Always! My 9 am crew lights up my day.  I have made some fantastic new friends. We work hard, but we also have a lot of fun!  There is no pretense. I work my schedule around hitting CF every day it’s open.  Dave travels a lot so we don’t often get there together, but it’s a blast when we do. I can’t say enough about the support and the people in our community. It ROCKS!

4. What  accomplishments are you most proud of?

David- Kipping Pull-Ups.  Also, this past summer I windsurfed for the first time in about 10 years and am hooked again.  I am convinced that CrossFit helped me with the stamina and strength to feel comfortable back on the board again.

Tammy- I could not do a push up when I joined CrossFit. I can now do 10 RX in a row.  I could not do an 8 pound wall ball. I can now do 14 pounds. I just FEEL better.  I am so much stronger. I love that.

5. What are your challenges and goals going forward?

David- I need to get a muscle up!

Tammy- I have to get my double unders and link kipping pull ups.  My cleans need some work…that early arm pull! Also, I am way too hard on myself.  It’s good and bad….good because it pushes me to improve, but it can be bad…when I find myself so frustrated that I want to cry. I am working on giving myself a break 🙂

6. Most of the time you guys workout together. Who is more competitive during workouts? Do you guys consider the hour you spend in the gym quality time? Whose the motivator?

David- When I am not traveling during the week, I try to coordinate my schedule to work out at the same time as Tammy.  It is something we both enjoy and can share and compete over.  Tammy is definitely more competitive and motivates me to push myself.

Tammy- We do not get to work out together as much as we would like as Dave travels a lot, but whenever we can, we do.  We motivate each other.  If one of us is having a more challenging day, the other is supportive and encouraging.  I can’t imagine being on this journey without him. It is so much a part of my life and I love sharing it with him.  When he is away, we talk about the WODs.  When he is home, we try and work out together. We both eat Paleo.  CrossFit has become a part of our daily life and conversation.  We have often talked about how if we were not doing this together, it would not be nearly as rewarding.  We enjoy a lot of activities together, and this has definitely become another healthy common bond.

7. If you could describe your spouse in one word what would it be?

David- T-Dog!  (Thanks Harrison)

Tammy- Committed

David and T-Dog are an amazing couple!!! Their hard work and dedication has shown what RCFBC stands for. They both bring something different to the community and always show up with a big smile! Keep striving for greatness “Team RUGGS”!!
